Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited (ICBL) is expanding its commitment to literacy with a new partnership with the National Library Service, a BDS$75,000 contribution towards the purchase of a Pop-Up Library Vehicle, and plans to introduce a Reading, Writing and Storytelling Summer Camp in 2027.
The announcements were made by ICBL’s Chief Executive Officer, Goulbourne Alleyne, at the media launch of the seventh edition of the ICBL National Junior Spelling Bee Competition, as the company builds on its longstanding efforts to encourage children to develop a love of reading and strengthen their literacy skills.
“The Spelling Bee is only one component of ICBL’s broader literacy objective. We are now beginning to move into what I would describe as the transformational stage of that journey,” the CEO said.
ICBL will contribute BDS$75,000 toward purchasing a Pop-Up Library Vehicle, representing about half the vehicle's cost. The initiative is expected to give the National Library Service greater flexibility to take books and library services directly into schools and communities, while supporting creative activities that encourage children to engage in reading.
The partnership will also pave the way for ICBL’s first Reading, Writing and Storytelling Summer Camp, planned for 2027. The camp is expected to give children opportunities to read, write, create stories, explore characters, and build confidence in expressing themselves.
“Our ambition is simple: more books in the hands of our children, more children discovering the joy of reading, and more young Barbadians finding the confidence to read, write, imagine and tell their own stories,” the CEO remarked.
